Real-world use cases
The threshold set too low
A store offers free shipping over an amount barely above its AOV.
The calculator shows the added margin does not cover shipping, so the bar is raised. Result: free shipping that lifts profit, not just orders.
Choosing a launch threshold
An owner is unsure where to set the bar.
Testing a few thresholds finds the level where added basket margin clears shipping. Result: a data-backed threshold from day one.
Why a free-shipping threshold is a pricing decision
Free shipping is one of the strongest nudges in ecommerce, but offering it unconditionally simply hands away margin on every order. A threshold turns it into something smarter: a target that encourages customers to add more to their cart to qualify. Done right, the extra they spend to reach the bar more than pays for the shipping you absorb, so free shipping lifts both average order value and profit. Done wrong, the bar sits too low and you subsidize shipping on orders that barely grew.
The math that decides the bar
The logic is simple once you see it. When a customer stretches their order to hit the threshold, the extra amount they add earns you its gross margin. If that added margin exceeds the shipping cost you cover, the lifted order is more profitable than it would have been. So the threshold has to sit far enough above your average order value that the typical stretch produces more margin than the shipping subsidy costs. The calculator finds that balance from your numbers.
Not too high, not too low
There is a window. Set the threshold too low and it barely changes behavior while costing you shipping. Set it too high and few customers bother to reach it, so it stops lifting orders at all. The sweet spot is a bar that a meaningful share of customers will stretch to hit, where the stretch is large enough to clear the shipping cost. Testing a few thresholds against your real margin and lift assumptions reveals that window quickly.
Pair it with your order economics

Offers optimize the orders you already get. Growth needs more of them
A well-set free-shipping threshold is a genuine profit lever, but it works on the orders you already have, nudging each one a little higher. It cannot, on its own, bring you more customers. The stores that compound are the ones that combine sharp offer economics like this with a steady, growing flow of qualified traffic, so the optimized average order value is multiplied across an expanding base of buyers rather than a fixed one.
Digital Success helps Shopify brands build that flow through organic growth and conversion, including our Shopify SEO services, so your smart offers act on a rising tide of orders. Let us help you grow the orders your offers optimize.
