But you don\u2019t know exactly what it entails or how it works. Well you\u2019re in luck, you came to just the place to get a quick crash course.<br \/>\n<strong>Let\u2019s start with something easy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PPC, or Pay per Click, is a way of describing the method of advertising in which an advertiser pays a specific amount of money each time their ad is clicked by someone behind a computer or a mobile device. Oh, and PPC is essentially the same as CPC (cost per click), in case anyone was wondering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Okay, but what are these Ads that you speak of?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can find PPC ads anywhere and everywhere, some annoying, some informative, and some funny. Let\u2019s take a quick walk through Google lane and explore this vast expanse of potential advertising territory we know as the Internet. The most basic form, which we have all seen appears here, on the internet\u2019s most popular page with a search for \u201cBasketball Shoes\u201d:<\/p>\n<div class=\"forImgCls\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.digitalsuccess.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/new-28.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-197\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.digitalsuccess.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/new-28.jpg?resize=604%2C435&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"new 2\" width=\"604\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.digitalsuccess.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/new-28.jpg?w=890&amp;ssl=1 890w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.digitalsuccess.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/new-28.jpg?resize=300%2C216&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>These ads don\u2019t show up in every search, but for highly competitive buying items like these shoes or laptops, they generally show up in these three forms that you can see above.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The sidebar text ad<\/li>\n<li>Image Ads (can appear on the side as well)<\/li>\n<li>Paid search ads (shows directly above the \u201corganic\u201d search results, AKA this is \u201cinorganic\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Each time you or anyone else clicks on these ads (based on an algorithm) these companies have to pay a small fee to Google, almost like a rental fee that a band pays to rent out a performance venue. Except this total isn\u2019t some small-time venue, this total equals to over <a title=\"Blog Hubspot\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/blog\/tabid\/6307\/bid\/33784\/An-Industry-Breakdown-of-Google-s-100-Million-Per-Day-Advertising-Revenue-INFOGRAPHIC.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">$100 million every single day.<\/a> Now <em>that\u2019s<\/em> one profitable venue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But you said we can find these ads anywhere<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s right, I did. Let\u2019s check out the <a title=\"Most popular website in the world\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_most_popular_websites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">99<sup>th<\/sup> most popular website in the world<\/a>, The New York Times, and see what they have going on.<\/p>\n<div class=\"forImgCls\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.digitalsuccess.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/new-29.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-198\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.digitalsuccess.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/new-29.jpg?resize=604%2C525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"new 2\" width=\"604\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.digitalsuccess.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/new-29.jpg?w=987&amp;ssl=1 987w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.digitalsuccess.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/new-29.jpg?resize=300%2C260&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><em>Remember when I said PPC can be annoying<\/em>? So this along with those ads that popup with the tiny little \u201cx\u201d in the corner that is so hard to click is probably what you thought of. Banner ads like this often cover much of the screen so they\u2019re particularly intrusive and hard to ignore. I personally recommend not straying into this side of PPC but I can\u2019t lie, this did build my awareness of \u201cAudemars Piguet\u201d\u2026 even if it is a negative association.<\/p>\n<p>But those other ads were shown on Google search, so who gets paid for this? Well, they all do. Since this ad was created and distributed through the Google PPC platform, if you click on this ad, most the money this Watch brand has to pay for this click goes to Google but a cut of it goes over to The New York Times as well. This is somewhat like a renter\u2019s fee that Google utilizes as space for your ad to show.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t forget, Google isn\u2019t the only place to advertise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Google may be the largest of them all, but there are plenty of other PPC platforms to use, like \u201cTwitter Ads\u201d. Scroll down your twitter feed for less than a minute and you\u2019re bound to run into something related to this ad that @amazon is running right now:<\/p>\n<div class=\"forImgCls\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.digitalsuccess.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/new-210.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-199\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.digitalsuccess.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/new-210.jpg?resize=593%2C378&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"new 2\" width=\"593\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.digitalsuccess.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/new-210.jpg?w=593&amp;ssl=1 593w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.digitalsuccess.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/new-210.jpg?resize=300%2C191&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 593px) 100vw, 593px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>If you\u2019re not sure if what you\u2019re seeing is an ad or something you\u2019re seeing naturally, that little promoted sign in the corner is a disclaimer that this is fair game in the Twitter playground. Again, Amazon does have to pay a small amount to Twitter each time someone clicks this ad.<\/p>\n<p>Same goes for YouTube, Facebook, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does one pay for these ads?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After all this discussion of people paying other people these clicks, maybe you\u2019d like to know a little more about what happens behind the scenes. When you really zoom into the intricacies, this can be complicated, but I\u2019ll just give you the short version.<\/p>\n<p>In Search or Display advertising, marketers usually place a \u201cbid\u201d for a keyword that is being searched by a user, much like yourself. If this advertiser has a higher bid than their competition for this keyword, Google knows that their advertisement leads to a high quality webpage, and that their ad structure has an overall good quality ranking, their advertisement is likely to be shown to the user.<\/p>\n<p>When dealing with highly competitive markets, however, the most popular keywords can get relatively expensive, like \u201cbuy luxury car\u201d or \u201cdiamond wedding ring\u201d. In fact, some of the most experienced Google PPC users <a title=\"Why not to use Google PPC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/johnrampton\/2014\/07\/07\/5-reasons-you-shouldnt-use-adwords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">recommend to not use Google PPC<\/a> in some instances. As stated by Google, always make your priority to think about what the clicks are worth to your company so that you can match your maximum \u201cbid\u201d to that amount, e.g. don\u2019t bid $1 for a click on an ad for bubblegum that costs $.75.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why people decide to pay for this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Besides of course acquiring potential customers, PPC ads give your website exposure through increased traffic. The best part is, if you\u2019re running ads that have relevant keywords, the traffic you\u2019re acquiring, is actually looking for <em>you<\/em>.
