Key facts
- Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move your shop, so relevance and prominence are where the work goes. Source: Google Business Profile Help: How Google determines local ranking
- Google's guidelines ask that your business name, address and hours on your profile match how you operate in the real world. Keyword-stuffed names can get a profile suspended. Source: Google Business Profile Help: Guidelines for representing your business on Google
- A study by the PR firm 5W, reported by Plumbing and Mechanical magazine, found 87% of HVAC and plumbing contractors did not show up when homeowners asked AI assistants for a recommendation. It is a self-published agency study, so read it as a warning sign, not a census. Source: Plumbing and Mechanical: 87% of HVAC and plumbing contractors are invisible when homeowners ask AI
- Google says pages shown in its AI features have to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. There is no separate trick for AI Overviews. Source: Google Search Central: AI features and your website

- Read your fixes. The five fixes worth the most points, each marked as something you can do yourself or something that needs a pro.
- Share and re-test. Share the card with your team, fix the top items and score again in 60 to 90 days.
What is plumbing SEO?
Plumbing SEO is the work that gets your company found when someone near you searches for a plumber, on Google Maps, in the regular results and now inside AI answers. For most shops the map pack matters most: the three businesses shown with the map at the top of the page get the calls from people with water on the floor.
It is not one trick. It is a profile set up right, a website that answers what homeowners ask, reviews that keep coming and the tracking to prove which of it pays.
SEO for plumbers: five areas that decide who gets the call
- Google Business Profile. Primary category, listed services, real photos and honest hours.
- Service and city pages. One page per money job and per city you want work from, each with local proof.
- Reviews. New ones every month, replies to all of them, and words that mention the job and the town.
- Tracking. Call tracking per source and conversions in analytics, so you stop guessing.
- AI answers. Consistent business facts across the web and mentions on the local sites assistants cite.
The scorecard weights these 25, 25, 20, 15 and 15 points. Profile and pages carry the most because they decide whether you show up at all.
Local SEO for plumbers: the Google Business Profile checklist
Start here. It is free, it is fast and it often moves the needle within weeks rather than months.
- Primary category set to Plumber. Secondary categories only for work you do, such as water heater installation or drain cleaning.
- Every service you want calls for listed, with a short plain description.
- New job photos every month. Real trucks, real techs, real jobs. No stock photos.
- Hours that match when a person answers. Claiming 24/7 and sending night calls to voicemail costs you calls and reviews.
- The same name, address and phone on your site and every directory.
- A service area that matches where you take work, not every town in the county.

Plumbing website design that makes the phone ring
A good plumbing website is not about looks. On a phone, the number has to be one tap away at the top of every page. Each core service needs its own page that says what it costs, how long it takes and why someone should trust you with it. City pages need real jobs from that city, not the same paragraph with the town name swapped.
Quick test: open your site on your phone, on cell data, and time how long it takes to find and tap your phone number. If it is more than a few seconds, fix that before anything else.
How to get your plumbing company named in ChatGPT and AI answers
When a homeowner asks an assistant who to call, it pulls from what it can find about local plumbers: directories, reviews, local news and best-of lists, and company websites. You get named when those sources agree on who you are and say good things about you.
- Make your name, phone, hours and services identical everywhere.
- Answer real homeowner questions in plain words on your service pages.
- Earn mentions on the local lists and sites the assistants cite. The prompt test above shows you which ones.
- Keep reviews flowing on Google and at least one other site.
Test monthly with the same prompts. Answers vary by person and by day, so look for a trend, not a single result.
How long does SEO take for a plumbing company?
Profile fixes and review requests can show results within weeks. New service and city pages usually take a few months to settle in rankings, and longer in a crowded metro. Anyone promising the top spot in 30 days is selling something you should not buy. Track calls by source from day one so you can see progress before the rankings catch up.
Choosing a plumbing SEO company: questions to ask
- Will I own my website, my profile and my call tracking numbers if we part ways?
- How will you report booked calls, not just rankings and traffic?
- What exactly will you do in month one, two and three?
- Do you write pages from our real jobs, or reuse the same copy for every client?
- How do you handle AI answers, not only Google rankings?
If an agency cannot answer these plainly, keep looking. If you want to hear our answers, we are glad to walk through them.
Field notes from our team
- Take a photo on every job. Ten good ones uploaded monthly beats a hundred uploaded once.
- Text the review link before the tech leaves the driveway. Asking later rarely works.
- Write each service page around the questions customers ask on the phone.
- Never put city names or keywords in your business name on Google. It is a fast route to a suspension.
- Score yourself again every quarter and track the number in your leadership meeting.
